CLAY COUNTY, Mo. – Bones, which were discovered by a dog and his owner, once again have the attention of local law enforcement. It is believed they are the remains of a woman from a 1985 homicide cold case.

The bones were discovered by the dog, which dragged them into the backyard on his owner’s home. The owner called police after seeing the bones.

“He had a Pit Bull and a Doberman. They dug up a part of the jaw bone from what I remember,” Rich Edwards said about his neighbor’s dogs.

He’s lived there his entire life and was only 11-years-old when the bones were discovered. Edwards can still recall the frenzy surrounding that day.

“They covered that scene and had it quarantined off, dang near left an officer around there for a while before they had it all cleared up,” he said.

Even though the bones are long gone, the memory still haunts the community.

“Keep my doors locked I guess. We don’t keep them unlocked anymore as we used to probably,” he said.

About three weeks ago, the bones were sent to a forensics program and the University of North Texas.

On February 20, 2015 the Clay County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Squad announced that they had recently renewed their efforts into the investigation of a female homicide victim whose skeletal remains were discovered near Missouri City, Missouri on April 18, 1985 in a field near 210 Hwy and Boyer Road.

The remains are believed to be those of a female in her late teens to early 20’s and her death has been estimated to have occurred as early as 1984.

A tortoise-shell barrette style comb was also found at the recovery site.

Detectives said they have chosen to resurrect the 1985 homicide cold case because of new technology which has been developed. They believe it will help solve this case. Last year Detectives solved a 1990 cold case in a similar fashion.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office and investigators from the Cold Case Investigative Squad held a question and answer session regarding details of the cold case at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
