LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — A school bus driver has been ticketed after being involved in a crash Monday that left several members of the Raymore-Peculiar High School volleyball team with concussions.

One girl was still in the hospital Wednesday night with a back injury. The crash happened near Lee’s Summit West High School. Police say the driver tried to make a U-turn and collided with a truck. Several members of the senior team cannot play until they’re medically cleared.

“I just remember hearing them scream, ‘watch out truck!'” Haley Burdick recalled.

Like Burdick, most of the players remember a chaotic scene inside the bus.

“I just remember there being glass everywhere, looking up seeing Krosbie and her face bleeding everywhere,” Brooke Spalding said.

Senior Krosbie Smith was left with 30 stitches. She had to have plastic surgery to reattach her eyebrow.

“I was sitting right where the truck hit us,” she said.

The bus was carrying 20 students and aking the Ray-Pec volleyball team to Lee’s Summit West for a district tournament game. Police say the driver missed his turn.

“I was sitting by our coaches and they said, ‘don’t turn here,'” Ortiz said.

Still, police say the driver decided to make a U-turn.

“He could’ve killed us,” Smith said.

All of the seniors who suffered concussions now wait for doctors to give them the all clear.

Their wounds might be stitched up but now they’re facing more pain. The game they were supposed to play the night of the accident was rescheduled for Wednesday, but instead of hitting the court, they watched from the sidelines.

“It is very hard, I cried for at least five hours last night. Just realizing my last game for my high school I played for for so long is already over. We could’ve gone so much further,” Ortiz said.

They were honored by their teammates, and even by their opponents. All of the support means the world to Smith. She says she just wishes their bus driver would’ve been as thoughtful.

“This is what you look forward to as a senior. A chance to win districts. He took that all away from us,” she said.

One senior is still in the hospital with a serious back injury. We’re told she has feeling in her legs but is having trouble walking.

The bus driver was given a city citation for attempting a U-turn when not safe.
