GREENE COUNTY, Mo. — The Greene County Sheriff’s Office says that prosecutors have charged Gypsy Blancharde , 23, and Nicholas Godejohn, 26, of Big Bend, Wisconsin with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection to the death of Gypsy’s mother Dee Dee Blancharde. Gypsy and her boyfriend Godejohn are accused of stabbing Dee Dee to death and then fleeing to Wisconsin.

According to court documents posted on KY3 in Springfield, Godejohn admitted he traveled to Springfield to see Gypsy and agreed to kill her mother, Dee Dee. He told prosecutors he only killed Dee Dee because Gypsy asked him to do so.

Prosecutors said Gypsy admitted she was present when Godejohn killed her mother, and she knew he was going to kill her. According to the documents, Godejohn waited till he believed Dee Dee was sleeping in her room before he climbed on top of her and stabbed her.

The investigation into the case began on Sunday when police responded to a call Sunday afternoon from concerned friends who said they had not seen Gypsy or her mother since June 10.  Neighbors said they decided to call police after a Facebook post on the mother and daughter’s shared profile page led them to become suspicious, which Gypsy later told  prosecutors she posted to help police find her mother’s body.

Police said by the time they arrived at the home in the 2100 block of North Volunteer Way, a neighbor had already entered the home through an unlocked window and reportedly told police that no one was in the home. However, Dee Dee’s body was found shortly after, and police began investigating her death as a “violent” homicide.

Police become suspicious after speaking with friends and neighbors and decided to issue an Endangered Person Advisory for Gypsy, who they found at Godejohn’s home in Wisconsin after tracking where the Facebook post came from.

Greene County Sheriff Jim Arnott believes Gyspy and Godejohn remained in Springfield for a few days after allegedly killing Dee Dee. The two visited various businesses before they took a Greyhound bus to Wisconsin. Prosecutors said Godejohn mailed the knife he used to kill Dee Dee to his home in Wisconsin to prevent getting caught with it.

“I want to say thanks to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office and to Sheriff Severson who has been an invaluable resource to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office as we have proceeded through this investigation. We are at a point now that the prosecutors has filed charges this morning for first degree murder on two suspects,” said Sheriff Arnott.

Blancharde

Sheriff Arnott says the investigation uncovered a record of possible financial fraud and deception by both Blancharde and the victim. Previous news reports suggested Blancharde needed a wheelchair due to muscular dystrophy and leukemia, but Godejohn’s stepfather says Blancharde walks and talks normally. In 2009, FOX 4 health reporter Meryl Lin McKean featured the Angel Flight program in a health report.  Gypsy, accompanied by her mother, was on the Angel Flight on the day Meryl Lin was interviewing the Angel Flight pilot about his work. Dee Dee and Gypsy said they were from Louisiana and were saved after Hurricane Katrina  by St. Johns Hospital in Springfield, Mo.

“I had my dress on and Gyps had her clothes on and that was about it,” said Dee Dee about their rescue after the hurricane.

Gypsy Rose said she was 14-years old in 2009 and every other month or so, accepted Angel Flights free of charge from Springfield to Kansas City for treatment. At that time, her mother only wanted FOX 4 to say that Gyspy Rose had “multiple medical challenges.”

Police told KY3 they believe Gypsy and Dee Dee had a history of “mystery and deception.”

“Things are not always as they appear,” Sheriff Arnott told KY3 as he stated that Gypsy does not need a wheel chair to get around, which they were originally told.

He also added that Dee Dee has not been close with her family for more than 15 years and that she and Gypsy were allegedly involved in financial fraud. Court documents stated Gypsy and Godejohn took thousands of dollars from a safe in Dee Dee’s bedroom before fleeing the home in a cab. Investigators said they are still working to determine what all the fraud entailed but said it was a “long pattern and extensive.”

Sheriff Arnott also told KY3 they believe Dee Dee and Gypsy had secret lives, which is one reason why Gypsy was originally listed as 19 years old. Police said she had three different birth dates listed.
