PLATTE COUNTY, Mo. — A KCMO man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Friday  for attempted enticement of a child and attempted statutory rape in the first degree.

Christopher Craig, 36, was found guilty in December of 2014 after he admitted that he would have had sex with a 13-year-old girl if she would have allowed him to.

According to Platte County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Zahnd, Craig went to a hotel in Kansas City in July of 2013  with the intention “to rape a 13-year-old girl to the verge of unconsciousness,” but he was instead met by an undercover officer who had been conducting a sting operation.

“Thank goodness this case did not involve an actual child, but the defendant made it very clear he would have completed the acts if given the opportunity, Zahnd said. “Those who would rape and abuse children deserve long prison sentences, and we did all that we could to send this defendant to prison for as long as possible.”

According to prosecutors, the officer posed as the mother of a 13-year-old girl on a website that pedophiles are known to frequent. Prosecutors said Craig sent a text message to the purported mother and offered to give the girl “the full lesson on how to please a man properly and would involve all three orifices.”

“I can tell you that the way he described this rape would be appalling and disgusting. It was so depraved, it’s one of the worst cases that I’ve read in my more than 12 years of doing this job. I think the public needs to be aware that this man is walking our streets, because it’s my opinion that he is a very dangerous person,” Zahnd said.

Craig continued to exchange messages with the purported mother over the next few months. Prosecutors said that at one point he sent a 15-point plan that outlined the ways he planned to abuse the child.

“In all my years as a prosecutor, I have seen very few cases where a defendant’s plan to sexually abuse a child was so deliberate, so detailed, and so disgusting,” Zahnd said.

Prosecutors said Craig was freed after a $100,000 cash bond was posted and remains free pending appeal. Prosecutors said they requested that Craig’s bond be increased after he was convicted, but the request was denied.

Craig is set to serve concurrent sentences of 10 years for each count, according to prosecutors.

Craig’s wife Audrey and his father Charles were present at the sentencing Thursday. According to prosecutors, his wife and father filed letters and pleaded for  leniency.
