OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Hundreds of orders are pouring in just days after a young, legally blind artist from the metro was featured on a national TV morning news show last Sunday.

FOX 4 has featured Jeff Hanson many times over the years, starting in 2005 when he was a FOX 4 young achiever of the week. Now he’s 21 years old and selling more paintings than ever.

“Yellows, whites, greens, pinks, and of course, the bright blue sky; then I texture it with tile trowel, putty knives, spoons and salad forks,” Jeff explained.

Bright colors that bring life to the unique, textured paintings that have become the 21-year-old’s signature. He creates amazing works of art, all while legally blind.

He was diagnosed with a genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis when he was just six years old. A resulting brain tumor took his sight, but it didn’t take away his passion as he turned a hobby of painting notecards in the hospital into a booming business.

“It was something to do to take my mind off of treatment,” he explained.

His business was given an even bigger boost when his story aired on a national TV morning show last Sunday.

“The response was absolutely insane,” he said.

His mom, Julie, says they can’t keep up with the demand.

“These are all people that wanted to buy paintings. This stack is for people who have requested for charity. This is all my paperwork going for the ones that sold this week,” she pointed out to FOX 4’s Katie Banks.

This week alone they’ve sold 47 canvasses and more than 500 painted notecards. Hundreds more requests are pending for original paintings that Jeff hasn’t even started yet.

“We`re overwhelmed with the response. I knew that it would be a lot, I mean, we were forewarned that it would be somewhat overwhelming, but the response is amazing,” Julie said.

It’s a response that also includes hundreds of letters of support from families sharing their own struggles, and how Jeff inspires them. Before the age of 20, Jeff raised $1 million by auctioning off his paintings for charity.

“He`s just one kid from Kansas, just one visually impaired from Kansas doing philanthropy, art and entrepreneurship and what a difference one soul can make,” Julie said.

The paintings sell from anywhere between $1,800 to 13,000 apiece. Warren Buffett and Elton John have both purchased paintings. For more about Jeff’s works, check out his website at this link.
